What the Class 7 Road Test Assesses

Starting and Stopping

Smooth acceleration from a stop, proper braking, and coming to a complete stop at all stop signs and red lights. Rolling stops are the single most common reason students fail the Class 7 road test.

Shoulder Checks and Mirror Use

Every lane change, every turn, and every merge requires a visible shoulder check in addition to mirror checks. Examiners watch your head movement closely — if your head does not visibly move to check your blind spot, it will be marked.

Intersection Management

Scan left-right-left at every intersection. Yield correctly on unprotected left turns. Come to a complete stop at all stop-controlled intersections before checking for cross traffic.

Speed Management

Match the posted speed limit. Driving too slowly is penalised as much as driving too fast. On arterial roads and in school zones, maintain appropriate speed while staying aware of your surroundings.

Turns and Lane Positioning

Turn from and into the correct lane. Signal early — at least 3 seconds before turning. Approach turns at a safe, controlled speed and complete them in the correct lane.

Parking and Three-Point Turns

Parallel parking, pull-in parking, and three-point turns are all assessed on the Class 7 road test. Each requires clear signalling, checking mirrors, and smooth execution.

Class 7 Road Test Edmonton — FAQ

The Class 7 road test is a practical driving assessment that tests your ability to safely operate a vehicle under Alberta traffic laws. It assesses starting and stopping, turning, lane changes with shoulder checks, intersection management, speed control, and parking. Passing gives you a Class 7 GDL licence — the first stage of Alberta's Graduated Driver Licensing system.

Most students are ready for their Class 7 road test after completing Arrow's Standard Course (10 in-car lessons). Some students benefit from additional lessons — the More Road Time package gives you 14 in-car hours. Timeline from first lesson to test-ready is typically 4 to 8 weeks.

Rolling stops (not coming to a complete full stop at stop signs), missing shoulder checks on lane changes, incorrect lane positioning on turns, speeding or driving too slowly, and incomplete intersection observation. Arrow instructors specifically prepare you to avoid all of these.

Yes. Car rental for road test is available at $90 + GST. Your Arrow instructor accompanies you to the registry in a dual-control vehicle. You drive the test in that vehicle, giving you a familiar, insured, and certified car.

After passing your Class 7 GDL road test, you must hold that licence for a minimum of 12 months before attempting the Class 5 GDL test. During that period you must drive with zero blood alcohol, must not carry more passengers than seat belts, and must not drive unsupervised between midnight and 5:00 AM.

You must pass the knowledge test and obtain your Class 7 learner's licence before you can take the in-car portion of driving lessons with Arrow. Arrow offers Knowledge Test Prep sessions to help you prepare for the written exam.
