Every new driver in Edmonton has questions — about the licensing process, about what happens in lessons, about the road test, and about how to get better faster. Arrow Driving School's certified Edmonton instructors answer these questions dozens of times each week. Here are the most common ones, answered honestly and directly.
Before Starting Lessons
Do I need my Class 7 before I start in-car lessons?
Yes. You must hold a valid Alberta Class 7 learner's licence before you can attend in-car driving lessons with any certified driving school in Edmonton. The Class 7 licence requires passing the Alberta knowledge test at an Alberta registry office. Arrow's Knowledge Test Prep course ($200 + GST) prepares Edmonton students for this test specifically — covering the high-failure areas of road signs and GDL rules.
What is the difference between classroom and online theory?
Both options satisfy Alberta Transportation's theory requirement for certified driving courses, and both lead to identical certification. Classroom theory is taught by a live instructor at set times — better for students who benefit from discussion and structured scheduling. Online theory allows you to work at your own pace — better for students with busy or irregular schedules. Arrow offers both at all Edmonton locations.
During Lessons
How long does it take before I can drive on busy Edmonton roads?
Most Arrow students are ready for Edmonton's busier arterial roads — Terwillegar Drive, 99th Street, 23rd Avenue — by lessons 3 to 6, depending on how quickly they build foundational skills on residential streets. Highway driving on Anthony Henday Drive is typically introduced in the second half of the course. The pace adapts to each student.
What should I do if I make a mistake during a lesson?
Keep driving. Fixating on a mistake you just made creates exactly the distraction that causes the next one. Your Arrow instructor will note the error and address it — either immediately if it is safety-critical, or after the drive in a debrief. Composure after a mistake is a skill that your instructor actively helps you develop.
Can I request a specific instructor?
Yes. When you book with Arrow in Edmonton, you can request a specific instructor — male or female, speaking a specific language, experienced with nervous drivers. Arrow's team includes instructors with diverse specialisations. Mention your preference when booking and we will do our best to accommodate it.
Before the Road Test
How do I know when I am ready to book my road test?
Your Arrow instructor will tell you directly when they assess you as ready for your Alberta road test. Do not book before your instructor confirms readiness — overconfidence is one of the primary reasons Edmonton students fail their first road test. Arrow conducts mock road tests as part of every course so you experience the format before the real thing.
What happens if I fail my road test?
You receive a summary of the errors the examiner noted. Review this with your Arrow instructor, who can address the specific areas in targeted Brush-Up lessons before your next attempt. A single road test failure is not unusual — many excellent drivers needed two attempts. What matters is understanding what went wrong and correcting it before retesting.
After Passing
What are my restrictions as a Class 5 GDL driver?
Class 5 GDL drivers in Alberta must maintain zero blood alcohol concentration, cannot drive with more demerit points than full-licence holders before facing suspension, and face the same handheld device restrictions as all Alberta drivers. The GDL stage lasts a minimum of two years. After that period with a clean record, you are eligible for a full Class 5 non-GDL licence.
